Christopher Columbus Day

Growing up,
teachers forced fed me
stories. I swallowed words
typed neatly in hardcover history books.
I'd regurgitate lies without question,
"No, Little Girl. Don't ask. Absorb."
Chronicles revised-
rise annually.
I'd confuse fact with fiction.
Mix heroes with nobodies.
Naive.
I was taught to believe that he made
the greatest discovery.
Genocide sugar coated by
images of pilgrims and Native Americans
laughing over turkey. But,
dried poultry couldn't absorb the
blood of those who died by diseases
they couldn't fight.
Teary-eyed girls cried for
violated thighs.
Indigenous women birthed sons
whose color wasn't like their own.
Victimized.
And we celebrate this life?
We forget our roots for
a three-day weekend?..
Names of schools,
elementary schools lesson plans.
Not today.
I will not condone his villainous ways
I'll always remember
the sweat of the slaves .
Fuck 1492
This Nazi turned hero
gets no glory in my eyes

I agree, Columbus was one of the biggest frauds in history
His whole story is a lie.

I thought this was powerful. I feel like an asshole cause i didn't even notice you posted this on the same day I later posted a poem about Columbus. Like someone said I can hear this being performed. the Naive line would be powerful.
Was feeling this poem and your interest in history. dopeness miss

Solid piece, but I question the use of Nazi in the historical sense and context of it all. I see what you were attempting, but I do believe you could've found a better 'word' that would at least fit the figure being spoken about. iono something like pillager or plunderer, something to that effect.

yes! thank you for writing this
powerful. It had me the whole way through and never lost it's strength. I loved how your anger was facilited into advocating, it didn't come off as a rant to me but was educational too
